2009-01-02 2009: A LOOK AHEAD WHAT WELL SEE THIS YEAR BY JOHN GUERRIERO a

This year: The estimated usd. 45 million replacement of the Interstate 90 bridges that span Six Mile Creek in Harborcreek Township. Besides the safety improvement, the other good news is that two lanes of travel in each direction must be maintained during construction of the new bridges, said Pennsylvania Department of Transportation district official Don Holl.

This year: Work on the usd. 80. 5 million Erie International Airport runway-extension project will continue to take flight in 2009. It should be busy, with final designs, relocation, expansion of 8 acres of wetlands in Millcreek Township, acquiring at least 16 acres in Girard Township as a wetlands replacement site, construction of a flood-detention basin, and the relocation of Powell Avenue, which is in the way, said Chris Rodgers, the airports executive director.

2008-12-30 ZZHXY Contra Costa Times, Walnut Creek, Calif. , Gary Bogue column: Gary Bogue: Visiting raptor could be a Coopers hawk

The hawk was back when the rabbit was out on our back lawn, and did swoop down but we intervened and got Thumper Rabbit back into his cage rather quickly. I do have a backyard feeder for the neighborhood sparrows, juncos, a pair of chickadees and a few other species I have yet to identify. (Notice I did not mention the mourning doves; they seem to come with the property. )

We have an overweight lop-eared rabbit and a wonderful 18-year-old Maine coon cat, so my alarm was for them. The hawk was about a foot tall with a square head and very dilated pupils. I am only aware of a yellow ring around his pupils, and the brown and tan speckled feathers on his breast. I was stunned to see him so close and regret not being able to study him a bit longer.

2008-12-30 Twin Cities Performance Art Examiner: Opera goes lowbrow with "3 Redneck Tenors"

When Cletus detailed the productions storyline for me, I had to agree that certain details uncannily paralleled my cousins life. "3 good ole boys - Billy Bob, Billy Joe, and Billy Billee - take up the singin when they have ta raise the dough to buy Edna Mae a swanky new trailer. Just like that time I had ta buy Betsy Sue a new jeep after I done run hers clear into the creek. But instead of singin, I took that there extra shift at the machine shed. Whoo-wee, I wish I a-couldve sung like these boys. I never would of lost that second finger. "

2008-12-28 Remembering Whip Jones and Steeplechase Aspen Daily News Online

He asked me how I knew the area so well. I knew the answer to the question could end my brief patrol career. But I came clean about my practice of skiing the steep slopes off the Loge Peak ridge and scooting out the rabbit trail back to Boomerang.

So in the spring of 1974 I asked if he had a moment. He invited me into his office. We talked about the expansion of Highlands and my thoughts of opening the area then known as Castle Creek.

2008-12-28 News - birders make list, check twice

Three hooded mergansers, all females, were sighted at Corn Creek and 17 at Tule Springs, an indication that "hoodies," as theyre called, are rebounding. For a waterfowl that nests in the cavities of trees, hooded mergansers have benefited from nest boxes bird lovers have built across the country for wood ducks. Thats a sign that "hoodies and woodies" can thrive and multiply with help from conservationists.

Observers recorded 1,420 birds representing 49 species during the Christmas Bird Count conducted by the National Audubon Societys Red Rock Chapter at Corn Creek, the Desert National Wildlife Range and the nearby Pauite reservation. The bird species list and totals were compiled by Hermi Hiatt.
