2008-05-09 Wave of Mutilation: The 2008 Tribeca Film Festival

Which takes a meandering walk through the history of that New Orleans neighborhood, one of the oldest black communities in the nation. Local newspaperman and co-director Lolis Eric Elie frames the film as a search for the roots of the community once he buys a grand old house there and starts renovating it. He uncovers enthralling documents and footage about Trems history, particularly in being home to Americas first black newspaper, which played a crucial role in both Reconstruction and the early civil rights struggle. The film is not as focused as it could be, and a narrative device whereby the words of a storied Trem resident are relayed by an actor in period garb, doesnt play all that well in execution. But Elie is a thoughtful guide to an enthralling past, and the pre-Katrina footage of second-line dancers in Trem is so

2008-05-02 Alabama: The shellfish gene-Americas, Travel-The Independent

Further north, near Cathedral Square, lies a typical late-19th century neo-classical townhouse with a window display that consists of a display of mannequins in rabbit costumes. This is u o Space 301, a contemporary art gallery that made me stop and consider whether I hadnt, in fact, unwittingly walked on to the set of a David Lynch film.

Its hard to get fat on oysters and ndash; and why would you want to If an American should wish to unbuckle their belt a few notches, then the efficient way to go about it would be through a Herculean intake of corn dogs or doughnuts. However, the man sitting on the stool next to me at Wintzells Oyster House in Mobile, Alabama, has earned his girth in one of the hardest ways possible and ndash; through an oyster habit that would put an army of starfish to shame.

2008-05-02 Barbara Evans art reflects Southern roots Times Daily Florence, AL

By then she was selling her work at Little House, whose owner hired baby sitters to take care of the kids while Barbara painted. The Evanses had a big house in Redmont Park, where they threw lavish parties. Barbaras studio was in the servants house out back.

Evans and her brother, who is six years younger, could have been standup comics. Stewart arrives at her Irondale house in an outfit that suggests a Vaudevillian lumberjack, topped by a porkpie hat. Both Stewart and Evans collect peculiar items. Her living room shelves are lined with 1920s-era bobble doll ashtrays, pink flamingos and a half-dozen elks feet.

For a peek into Barbara Evans psyche, all you have to do is examine those eyeglasses. Theyre made of black plastic and slide low on her nose to give her an almost professorial air. Look close - AL Southern Artist

2008-04-27 PopMatters Books Feature Painfully Masculine: An Interview with Benjamin Percy

Most of the stories are what I consider a literary genre. Let me explain. A lot of contemporary literary fiction is full of gorgeous metaphors, gorgeous language, with so many stories ending sparkling with epiphanic dew. And along the way, sadly, not much happens. Its as though authors have lost touch with what made them fall in love with reading: plot, story. And I think theres something healthy about getting in touch with this again. So Ill take a haunted house story or a Western or a tale of revenge and reinvent it through a literary lens, honoring some of the archetypes and conventions, breaking others over my knee, in an effort to make the reader feel at once moved and entertained.

2008-04-22 Tahlequah Daily Press-Native elders traditions survive today

Its vital to keep traditions alive, he said. If we lose our language we lose our identity. We lose ourselves as Cherokee people, he said. But its possible to carry on tradition and live in todays society.

He talked of seeing a house that looked like a mansion from afar, yet upon approaching, it was revealed to have flaking paint, broken shingles.

Look at the full moon tonight. Rather than trying to form the traditional image of the man in the moon, you can see a rabbit instead, if you try.

2008-04-17 The Atlantic One Nation, Slightly Divisible Brooks

Hales observations are supported by nationwide polling data. Pew has conducted a broad survey of the differences between Red and Blue states. The survey found that views on economic issues do not explain the different voting habits in the two regions. There simply isnt much of the sort of economic dissatisfaction that could drive a class-based political movement. Eighty-five percent of Americans with an annual household income between usd. 30,000 and usd. 50,000 are satisfied with their housing. Nearly 70 percent are satisfied with the kind of car they can afford. Roughly two thirds are satisfied with their furniture and their ability to afford a night out. These levels of satisfaction are not very different from those found in upper-middle-class America.

2008-04-15 Should father ride-Local-Opinion-Yass Tribune

Growing food, either as a farmer or as a home gardener, was once obligatory for most households, particularly in the early days of the colony of New South Wales. Children were vital workers in performing a variety of tasks in the 19th and 20th centuries on farms and smallholdings. They lugged buckets of water, milked cows, hilled potatoes, set and checked rabbit traps, brought in the poultry at night, and were expected to help with harvesting and other major seasonal work. Their rewards were not great, non-existent in monetary terms, and generally basic in terms of food and clothing. Being valued as a member of a family team might have been a bonus in some families. Perhaps their contribution was taken for granted. Treats would have been rare, and sometimes the work was too hard for their young bodies.
