2008-12-07 A stark park

Scientists doing initial assessments of the burn areas say most of the seedbank, or the parks ability to revegetate on its own, still remain. Still, nearly all of 300 acres of native vegetation, restored in recent years to foster the growth of native animal species, was burned.

Fortunately, many of the animals that populated the park managed to avoid the fire. Rowe said the park was home to a good-sized deer population, and also bobcats, a few mountain lions, various snakes and reptiles, and over 200 types of birds.
